This project was about creating a beautiful roof that would bring light from the sky into a room of predetermined shape.

After the initial direction of choosing the rectangular floor plan, a function was imagined for the space. A library or reading room felt appropriate as the space could be given a character through choice lighting whilst specific lighting could be required in specific locations, for example in places for reading and on the shelves. The walls are lit by the constant opening from a gap between the walls and the ceiling.

The ceiling is cantilevered from the central frame of book shelves; this block is a hollow light well and allows the light to gently ease out over the books into the room.
